Africa Needs Trees! In addition to environmental protection there is a pressing need for trees in Lesotho, for:
shade • windbreaks • future wood supply • fruit orchard
It has been decided that trees should also be planted at the 19 Outreach Villages assisted by the Project, as a tangible future benefit for persons impacted by HIV/AIDS in those villages.
In addition to growing trees for poles and firewood, there is an emerging demand for fruit trees, especially apples which grow very well in the Pitseng area. There is a strong interest in planting fruit trees among the outreach villages, particularly apples which do very well in the Pitseng area, but some villages have indicated a preference for eucalyptus trees for poles and/or firewood. The latter cost about R1.20 per seedling whereas fruit trees cost about R15.00 per sapling. Although costing much more, fruit trees yield a long term stream of benefits over many years and therefore are more appropriate investment to directly benefit orphans, for whom these trees would be not only a sustainable source of food but also an inheritance.
Each household caring for orphaned children all 19 villages will be given up to five fruit trees for the orphans’ direct future benefit, to be planted on land occupied by that household.
