Departments at Phelisanong: Pre-school and Residence for Disabled Children The Phelisanong project grew up around the sheltering
of disabled children. A pre-school and residence provides care for handicapped,
mentally disabled, and chronically ill children, many of whom have been
abandoned or orphaned. Education, social interaction, counselling and
physical therapies encourage children to reach their full potential. Read more.... Following their motto, “nobody without testing, nobody without treatment”, the Phelisanong organization engage in energetic community outreach to combat HIV/AIDS. Aware of Lesotho’s prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS at 30%, volunteers conduct outreach to remote, unserviced villages in the district, providing in-home care for bedridden patients. Read more... The group produces traditional Basotho cultural handicrafts such as straw hats, knit articles, leathercraft, pottery, and reed mats. Youth, HIV/AIDS patients, and the disabled learn vocational skills and share proceeds of handicraft sales, fostering independance and providing cashflow to the Phelisanong project. Read more.... Visitors can experience traditional Basotho hospitality in this eco-friendly rondavel style backpackers lodge. Adjacent to the Phelisanong project, the guesthouse donates 20% of its proceeds to the group, creates a market for local handicrafts and products., and offers accommodation for project volunteers. Read more.... Organic Farm A 4 hectare organic farm is the main source of subsistence and income for the project. Volunteers grow maize, beans, squash, and sorghum, and raise chickens, pigs and rabbits. Food is distributed to orphans, HIV/AIDS patients and the destitute as part of Phelisanong’s social welfare program. Vegetables from the gardens are used to supplement school lunches, with surplusses sold to generate project income. Youth A youth HIV/AIDS club meets weekly; their activities include sports, dance, drama and music. Youth camps take place quarterly, aimed at teaching life skills and involving local teenagers in the work at Phelisanong. A scholarship fund has been established for needy secondary students, and vocational skills are taught to mentally handicapped youth in leathercraft, knitting, and handicraft production.
