Disabled Residence

Click here to find out how you can support the disabled residence project of Phelisanong, providing a family style home for children with special needs.

The Phelisanong organization was founded by a group of people living with disabilities who were determined to address the stigma and discrimination they faced growing up in Lesotho. Today the founders, together with a group of dedicated volunteers, care for children and youth with disabilities in a loving and supportive home environment.

From an original group of 20 children, caregivers today look after seventy children and youth with a range of disabilities and chronic illnesses.  Phelisanong is the only facility in Lesotho which accepts children with both physical and mental disabilities. Unfortunately it currently turns away more children than it can help due to lack of infrastructure.

Currently the project aims to construct quality, permanent housing for an eventual population of 80  children, in 10 family style homes. To date two of the buildings are complete, equipped with indoor plumbing and bathing facilities, and a biogas system which recycles waste into cooking fuel. A third building is under construction.

Please see our fundraising page to see how you can assist building a permanent home for children in Lesotho!
