Phelisanong is bringing soccer to a new generation of African kids.
For the price of a soccer ball, a uniform, and some shoes, young people gain access to coaching, life skills, HIV/AIDS counselling, and, most importantly, an opportunity to apply their talents to help others in their communities.
Using a ’football in the morning, community work in the afternoon’ approach, teams participate in food production, home and shelter repairs for orphans, the elderly and infirm, and coaching & mentorship for younger kids whose social supports have collapsed due to HIV. In a place where unemployment is rife, finding ways to engage young people in meaningful work while building their confidence and sporting abilities provides avenues for sustainable livelihoods for the next generation.
