Phelisanong is bringing soccer to a new generation of African kids. Using the beautiful game as an incentive, youth are encouraged to participate in community service projects that empower them and the orphans and vulnerable children who benefit. Using a basic ‘football in the morning, community work in the afternoon’ approach, teams participate in food production, home and shelter repairs for orphans and the elderly and infirm, and coaching & mentorship for younger kids whose social supports have collapsed due to HIV. For the price of a soccer ball, a uniform, and some shoes, young people gain access to coaching, life skills, HIV/AIDS counselling, and, most importantly, an opportunity to apply their talents to help others in their communities. In a place where unemployment is rife, finding ways to engage young people in meaningful work while building their confidence and sporting abilities not only prevents crime but provides avenues for sustainable livelihoods for the next generation of Africans.
