Telecentre

The Phelisanong project are looking to build a centre to be used as youth centre, library, community health outreach centre, adult literacy and education centre, and community telecentre.

The telecentre is intended to offer internet access, computer literacy training, and multi media instruction for locals. It is a virtual library to supplement the several hundred books on site. It will also be a hub for the creation of media by local youth and community members, lending strength to local voices.

The centre will be a place to:
• host workshops and meetings,
• house a resource library of publications and films,
• offer media training and internet access
• build capacity of grassroots organizations through hands-on training & sharing networks of contacts and resources.

A directory of local support group activities will be compiled and maintained on site, as well as an HIV/AIDS information bank whereby those affected and infected can access supports in their communities.

Workshops at the centre will include:
• organizational capacity building (i.e. what is a constitution, how to register an NGO, managing workflows and human resources, basic accounting & accountability, managing income generating projects)
• media training (publication design, particularly newsletters; use of photography and video for project reporting and promotion, website development, liaising with print & broadcast media)
• HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and treatment

It is the goal of the centre to become a self-sustaining entity that strengthens community level leaders and project participants in their work.
